Your Grocery Store Price Comparison List

February 20, 2019 By katiengoetz@gmail.com

Know where to buy your groceries to get the most bang for your buck!

Trader Joes Avocados
How do you know if you’re getting the best deal for your groceries? I’ve gathered the foods that are frequently on my grocery list and compared their prices at local and national chains. Being savvy with what you buy where can go a long way and your wallet will be thanking you! So let’s dive in!

My Grocery Routine

My grocery shopping routine is down pat.

I make my meal plan throughout the week whenever I have time Monday – Thursday. Everything gets planned out – breakfasts, lunches, snacks and dinners for everyday, although I leave weekends pretty open as I never know what our plans are going to be.

Once I have my meal plan done, I make my grocery list on Thursday night. I write down all the ingredients that I’ll need and then I go through my fridge and pantry to cross off anything I already have.

P.s. – writing your groceries in the order that you go through the store is immensely helpful!

Aldi
My Weekly Grocery Shopping Stops

Next up, grocery shopping time. I actually really love grocery shopping. People tell me to try the order online thing, but I truly like going to the store and seeing new brands or foods I want to try.

My first stop is Aldi. I go Friday over my lunch-hour or after work because it’s the closest one. (Yes, I stock the company fridge with all my groceries 🤷🏻‍♀️) We are getting one in Ankeny and I cannot fricking wait!!! 😬

(p.s. – Ankeny folks, mark your calendar, February 28th is the day!!!)

My Aldi run is typically the same foods every week, including most of my fruits and veggies, eggs, chips, gluten free crackers and oatmeal, meat and any other random stuff I need.

Aldi has really stepped their organic game up and I’m obsessed. It’s also why I shop there every week, you really can’t get better prices for organic foods anywhere else. (Check out Instagram stories for all my Aldi favorites 😊)

Next up, Hy-Vee. I go there on Saturday mornings. This is typically a smaller run, because it’s mainly packaged foods I don’t buy at Aldi or brands Aldi doesn’t have; things like cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, lunch meat, hummus, coffee creamer, you get the picture.

Then I’m done for the week. By making a grocery list and sticking to it every week, we save a lot of money and don’t waste much food.

Seriously, you should see our fridge by Friday. It’s pretty well bare.

VeggiesWhere to Buy

Alright, show me the money! 🤑

I’ve put together a spreadsheet with my go-to grocery list including a comparison on organic vs. conventional fruits and veggies. I’ve recorded prices from Aldi, Hy-Vee, Target, and Trader Joes, as those were the ones requested and also where I shop most often. (Sorry Costo/Sams folks. I started and then found it was too hard to compare prices, since it’s all bulk.)

I’ve tried to match sizes and brands as best as I could, but generally took the cheapest price (the store brand) to keep things consistent. Here you go 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

Grocery Price Comparison

*Please note, fruit, veggie and meat prices differ weekly.

As you can tell Aldi is definitely the cheapest. After that, it kind of just depends what you buy on a regular basis / what’s convenient for you.

Our Grocery Spend

Nick and I spend anywhere from $575 – $625 per month on groceries. Some months are higher, some months are lower depending on what we have going on and what we need to replenish.

We eat out about once a weekend, otherwise every meal is made at home or meal prepped.

Every household is different. I have to buy gluten-free, which is a bit more expensive and we chose to buy more organic foods, although not all.

Whether you’re trying to balance a budget or find ways to eat more wholesome, organic foods, I hope this grocery price comparison list helped you become a bit more savvy on where to buy all your goodies.

If you have any stores you want me to look at or other groceries to add to the list, just let me know! Happy shopping 🙂
